TICKETS TO RIDE

Metallic tokens were used to cover the fares in many forms of transport. Directors of Railway companies would have passes, sometimes struck in gold, entitling them to a lifetime of free journeys. At the other extreme, the provision of subsidised transport for pensioners is one of the few functions of metallic or plastic tokens to survive into the twenty-first century. Similar schemes for the benefit of council officials, schoolchildren, postmen etc., occurred in earlier times.
